C*VID Month #7: A Backwards Slide

Just as people had predicted, we're seeing a huge surge in cases. Wave 2. Things are sliding backwards--Ontario has already rolled back gathering sizes; and I predict we'll see an official rollback to Stage 2 to go back into place before the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend (October 12).

This, combined with the pre-holidays downturn that normally takes place this time of year, lead to a poor performing month. I still saw profit, and I still saw (minor) growth in my portfolio; the lesson here is that not all months are winners.

So aside from the small bump to last month's income post-blog update, this month has been a significant decline. To the tune of about half of what I pulled in last month. Total: $797.71.

I'm not too concerned; side hustles are generally up and down anyways--a strong reminder of why it's important to vary your income sources. You'll see why shortly; despite an overall downturn, some projects peformed on par or better than historical numbers.

So, let's break it down! From best performing income source, to the worst:

  • $467 from Nicehash mining. No surprise here; this tends to be pretty stable. A decline over last month; but still pretty high, considering the crypto market took a bit of a dump this month! All the earnings from this get dumped straight to Coinsquare for me to daytrade with.
  • $148 from Flipping. A paltry number, given my flipping venture's historical returns. The number would have been higher, but I was hit with an uncharacteristic high volume of returns/shipping damaged items; a total value (including shipping charged to customer that had to be refunded) far, far greater than what remaining gross profit there was. Would have beat last month's number if this was not the case... Been an unlucky and frustrating month in this regard. (Plus, remember that I've deprioritized Flipping & my other more active projects, to focus on the more passive-income style projects.
  • $100 from 3D Print sales. All exclusively Ebay this month. A decline over last month, but still reasonable, all things considered
  • $87 from Youtube ad revenue. This is the big shocker this month! A SIGNIFICANT 61.14% revenue increase over last month! I'd be happy if I could keep up this growth rate...
  • $50 from my Print on Demand sites (Redbubble, Society6, and Teepublic). A dip from last month, and still no sales on Teepublic; but not too bad given the pre-holiday dip that normally happens around this time. Will probably see a significant bump in Q4
  • $9.94 from Shapeways
  • $5.93 from MyMiniFactory
  • $2.34 from dividends
  • -$74.26 loss from my trading bots (two homebrew instances on Bittrex & Binance) and my single Gekko instance (poloniex). Crypto took a huge crap this month, causing a huge portfolio loss. I'm reasonably confident this will be gained back next month

Anything not mentioned, unfortunately did not produce any revenue whatsoever last month--for instance, I still have no Patreons for my Youtube channel! Might have to revisit my Patreon angle.

As always, I take a huge focus on my Youtube channel; as it is my passion project of the bunch--and frankly, after this past month, is the most promising for growth potential. The amount of growth I saw over September is nuts! Let's take a visit at some stats:

  • Published five videos, beating my target of 4
  • Currently at 1,293 subscribers; up  155 over last month
  • Subscriber growth rate: 13.62% -- Up from last month's 11.79%
  • Average daily views over September: 458; up over last months' 345, or a 29.85% increase
  • Average daily subscribers over September: 6, up over last month's 4; or a 50% increase

As mentioned, my crypto bots performed pretty poorly this month; but I think they're overall doing better than before. More tweaking is always a thing. I'm pretty confident I'll see profit in them next month.

As far as Binance referrals go, I managed a whopping singular referral this month, putting me up to 101, up from 100.. haha.

On to my stated task list I put forth last month, to see how I did:

  • At least 4 new Youtube videos
    Yep! Crushed it with 5.
  • Continue to climb towards 200 active flipping listings
Nope. Didn't have much time to attend to this, this month. Listing count has gone down as things have sold
  • Migrate Bittrex API on my homebrew trading bot to newest version
Nope. Got started, but not much progress. Given tomorrow is the last day, I'm aiming to crank it out sometime this week and restore functionality
  • 3x new MyMiniFactory/Shapeways listings
    Yep!
  • 2x new Print on Demand listings
Yep, pretty sure I did more than that
  • Ensure all 3D Print listings are properly imported from Shopify to Bonanza
Nope. Deprioritized this to focus on other stuff

As you can see, it was a very hit-or-miss month. I did lots of work, but didn't necessarily line up with what my original goals were.

Here's what I'm looking to accomplish in October:

  • At least 4 new Youtube videos
  • Migrate Bittrex API (now mandatory & high priority)
  • 1x MyMiniFactory/Shapeways Listing
  • 5x Print on Demand listings

Keeping my goals low so I overperform!

And finally, we take a look at my investment portfolio:

  • Month-on-month portfolio growth of 2.31%; possible only by the influx of crypto mining. Both crypto and stock assets are down significantly
  • Manual day trading on Coinsquare is up by 15.56% over my base line value; dropping from last month's highs. Waiting on several Sell orders to fill as crypto recovers
  • Debts continue to be paid down, rather than actively investing

That's it for this month! Hopefully next month treats us better
