C*VID Month #19: Creeping Normalcy

As of this post, case numbers have stabilized/started to drop slightly; and, like it or hate it, the new vaccine passport system is in place to require proof of vaccination for places like sit-down service in restaurants and public swimming at the local rec center. Slowly but surely we trend towards normalcy.

This month has seen a huge whirlwind of activity, including having to dip into my savings to pay for my wedding--as well as invest in parts for my mining rigs. It's been a very productive month, with the only notable misfire being that I did not publish a single Youtube video throughout September. (More on that in a bit)

Investments are down -33.5%; a little bit because of market drop, but mostly because I dipped into my savings to pay for my wedding and invest into a new GPU mining rig and hard drives for HDD mining Signum.

On the income front, I made only $681 gross revenue this month; due to a huge drop in some Poloniex holdings.

As always, let's break this down.

  • $797 from Nicehash, being my primary earner as always
  • $105 from Flipping; would have been more but I had a couple of returns this month
  • $106 from 3d print sales; this number will continue to drop to nothing as I phase out manual 3D print sales and other non-passive income sources
  • $33 from Print on Demand sales; only Redbubble gave me sales this month, the other three channels have been quiet
  • $30 in 3D print sales on Shapeways
  • $28 in 3D model sales on MyMiniFactory
  • $2.30 from Amazon affiliate sales; a pretty quiet month and a start contrast from the past few months
  • $1.95 in dividends
  • -$0.19 value loss in LBY tokens. Got tipped a few this month but since I haven't been uploading Youtube videos, this has been stagnant this month
  • -$18.96 in Signum token value loss; despite starting to earn some again
  • -$86 from Bittrex auto trading value loss and poor/timed out trades
  • -$426 in BTT token value loss on Poloniex. I hold BTT on there to earn the 8% annual staking rewards, and the recent market downturn saw a bit of a dump

Let's launch into Youtube, since that's one of the biggest items of discussion this week.

I did not publish a single video throughout September; due to a combination of being preoccupied with helping with wedding planning stuff (less than two weeks to go as of this post!) and the current project for my next video being very iterative. Thankfully, I've reached the point where I'm ready to pop out a video based on it, so I should be able to get out 2-3 videos in October.

Last month, I mentioned the Chapter 3 tax withholding issue with Adsense; I figured out what happened. When I did my original tax benefits, I didn't claim all the treaty benefits I was eligible for, so I was getting withheld due to that. I fixed it by resubmitting my tax info, and now I don't get anything withheld stateside. Whoo!

Here's an updated look at the trailing 365 day outlook on my metrics; still as flat as ever.

 Stats:

  • Publized ZERO videos, due to combination of wedding preoccupation and next video project iteration
  • At 3,820 subscribers, up 169 over last month
  • Subscriber growth rate: 4.63%, down from last month's 5.52%
  • Average daily views throughout September: 495, a decrease over last month's 530; or a decrease of -6.6%
  • Average subscribers throughout September: 6, down from last month's 7

Slight drop, not unexpected given the absolute lack of any content uploaded throughout September, though as you can see it's been stagnating for quite some time. I don't think I'm going to return to a full weekly video schedule until I see some growth.

In the cryptocurrency space, I've seen yet another drop in my Bittrex trading bot. Where it was up by 5% last month, it's currently down by -16%, after recovering from an absolute low of -30% this month.

I've come up with a list of tweaks to try and improve it, which will be part of my work items for the coming month.

In the mining arena, I've been doing a LOT of buildup. I've got my 7th mining rig up and running, sans GPUs, except for one of the repaired RX 570s that refuses to play well in the rig it originates from. I also upgraded the PSU on Mining Rig 2, giving it room for a third GPU, and also got two rigs up and running with fully plotted stacks of hard drives for Signum mining. In total, I've got 24TB of drives mining signum, with more drives on the way for the other mining rigs. I also have one RTX 3080 Ti on the way for my new mining rig, with plans to get more once I validate that the 3000 series will play nicely on a Windows 8.1 machine.

As I just alluded to, I successfully replaced the fans on all three graphics cards that needed them replaced and returned them to active service, though it took quite a bit of shuffling of GPUs around and driver reinstalls to get stuff working again. (Note: When you get a stable setup of 5 GPUs on a rig, don't fuck with it...)

On Coinsquare, I'm down to only 47.84% BTC value over my starting amount, due to withdrawals to finance my wedding and a GPU for my mining rig; this may continue into next month as I finish populating my new rig, but after that it's back to hardcore saving and trading.

I did a lot of work in the Flipping arena to get to 200 active listings; and I sold a few as well--though my numbers were reduced by a few returns. I've been making sure to keep 200 active listings, with a priority of putting up new ones whenever one would sell. So this particular project is now in a good holding pattern.

In regards to brainstorming ideas for using my programming skills, I've narrowed down to a single project I'd like to try focusing on. It balances stuff I'm experienced with and knowledgeable about, with a potential market demand that I have to verify. Not gonna reveal what it is, because it's the one idea I've had that I think might have some actual potential, and be reasonably accomplished by a single developer (me). This coming month I'll be doing some validation of market demand for it to see if it's worth pursuing.

In regards to my novel, I went through the currently done work (a prologue and two chapters) and refined them to fix some janky dialogue and phrasing that I wasn't happy with, and to also refresh my memory of what I've written thus far for my book. Going forward, I'd like to take chapter 3 that I'd already started a while ago and get it finished.

Although it wasn't officially on my to-do list, I even managed to get one new listing up for Shapeways/MyMiniFactory, so that was a bonus!

All in all, it's been a pretty productive month, sans lack of Youtube content. I know exactly what the two videos for October will be so I have a plan there; and I'd like to hit a few beats on the Print on Demand front as well.

Let's take a look at what I set out to accomplish for September and how I did:

  • Two new Mike in the Woods videos; temporary output reduction due to wedding semi-hiatus
Zero videos, marking my only major misfire this past month
  • Solve the USA Chapter 3 Tax Withholding issue with Youtube Adsense payments
    Solved & fixed
  • Replace fans on downed GPUs (3) and return to active service
    Completed
  • Get Mining Rig 7 operational, at minimum as a load spreader if the three fixed GPUs do not want to play nicely with existing rigs (AMD cards seem to have an issue playing nicely with one another)
Completed, it is hosting one of the re-fanned cards that didn't want to play nicely on the other rigs, and actively mining
  • Brainstorm potential software development passive income ideas, and refine to three candidates
Done, refined down to main idea for continued pursuit
  • Review novel draft thus far, and refine with newer story ideas and direction
    Done
  • Enable hats & other new products on all Redbubble listings
    Done
  • Plot first set of five hard drives for Signum mining and get operational
Even better, have 2 of 7 rigs running a full stack of drives (24TB total)
  • Hit and maintain 200 active Flipping listings
    Completed

All in all, except for the major Youtube misfire, I did pretty well in my to-do list, often even exceeding what my original goal was.

Let's take a look at what I want to accomplish in October--keeping in mind I'm set to get married this month and it may impact my productivity:

  • Two new Mike in the Woods videos. First one's ready for filming, second one will be good to go not long after
  •  Receive and validate RTX 3080 Ti mining on Mining Rig 007 via Windows 8.1
  • Assuming prior work item is successful, continue populating Mining Rig 007 with RTX 3000 series cards
  • Continue accumulating hard drives and setting up for Signum mining, with minimum target getting Mining Rig 007 up and running with five drives
  • Verify market demand for software dev project
  • Technical design document for software dev project
  • Maintain 200 active flipping listings
  • Complete Chapter 3 of novel
  • 3 new listings for either Print on Demand, or 3D Printing
  • Improvements for automated trading bot for order fills
  • Replace fan on one of the GPUs on mining rig 3 as it's causing stability issues with poor temps
  • Sign up for TeeFury as a seller (new Print on Demand sales channel)

Always escalating. Let's see how I do on this one...

Last item: Taking a look at my investments.

Like I mentioned previously, I had to dip into my savings pretty hard for wedding/mining stuff, so I saw a 33% drop this month (the market also took a bit of a shit). Them's the breaks, ebbs and flows. Still above target though, haha!

You can see how the weighting changed a little:
